Morning Drop Off Procedues Changing

Morning Drop Off

(by Don Meador, 11-18-19)

A new trial procedure for parents dropping off students at the Allen County-Scottsville High School will begin on Monday, December 2, 2019.

Persons dropping students off will now turn into the high school campus at the main entrance drive—-as if entering for an after-school event (athletic games, graduation, etc.). After turning, parents will need to make a right-hand turn and then circle left to loop around going past the front entrance of the Allen County Career and Technical Center. Along the sidewalk beside the high school auditorium, spaces will be available so that multiple drop offs can be made at the same time. All vehicles should remain single file and be pulled forward to the next available space and leave no gaps. School officials will be on hand to oversee the procedures.

Prior to 7 a.m. all students must enter the school at the front office door (Door #1). From 7 until 7:40, students can enter the high school at the closest door---either the office door (Door # 1) or Door # 4 near the Tech Center. At 7:40, Door #4 will be locked and all students must enter at the office door (Door #1).

Once the driver drops their child off, he/she will need to exit the campus by traveling in front of the Learning Opportunities Center (the old vocational school), turn left, and exit the campus in front of Edmonton State Bank.

According to high school principal Joseph Cosby, the change will help in multiple ways. First, the chances of accidents at the main high school entrance during peak drop off times (6:45-7:45) each school morning will be reduced. Second, drop off students will no longer have to cross in front of their vehicle when exiting from the passenger side, thus improving safety. In addition, the availability of multiple drop off spaces is expected to speed up the time needed to drop students off, thus reducing back-up traffic in the morning.

Cosby stresses that parents dropping students off and teachers coming to work (who park in front of the school) must enter at the main high school driveway entrance. The second entrance off the Bowling Green Road will only be available for student drivers or staff members needing to park in the rear of the building.

“Coming in at the main entrance and turning right to make the circle allows for room to wait if traffic begins to back up,” Cosby said. “If both drop office traffic and student drivers came in at the second entrance, traffic would back up onto the Old Bowling Green Road.”

As for afternoons, no traffic flow changes will occur.

“Afternoon pick-up traffic will not change from the way it is now,” Cosby emphasized. “No changes for the afternoon.”

School officials will have new signs and cones in place to help direct drivers as the change occurs. The new procedure will be monitored in December and any additional changes will be announced. Please review the attached map for reference.
