Board of Education Meets July 23

The Allen County Board of Education gave their approval to pay requests, a recurring contract, fundraising, fees, and trips during their short monthly meeting Monday night.

This time in 2017, an $8 million renovation at the James E. Bazzell Middle School was nearing completion. Final work was finished last fall and, Monday night, the Board okayed the final payments to three contractors for their services. With the payments, the District now can file B-4 paperwork with the state Department of Education---the final step in the renovation process.

The Board approved the yearly contract with the Allen County Health Department for school nurses. Under the agreement, the Health Department will again supply a school nurse for each school. The $85,000 contract does represent an increase from last year’s contractual amount of $72,415.

In other action, the Board approved a host of school fundraising projects submitted by teams and clubs.   The list of fund raiser includes various activities including selling projects, car washes, sport camps, basketball tournaments, a chili supper, auctions, a calendar girl pageant, a Murder Mystery Dinner, and merchandise sales. Several overnight trip requests were also approved.

As part of the consent agenda, the Board also reviewed and approved the fee schedule for various clubs at each of the schools. Approval was given to club fees at the high school and Tech Center (varies by club) with the fee helping to cover the cost of field trips, club shirts, and supplies for the club and community projects. The high school’s approved fees include a $5 parking tag fee and the $10 senior fee---a fee that helps t purchase decorations, supplies, and materials associated with the cost of Class Night and Graduation.  A locker rental fee ($4.00) and art fee ($8) was approved for the middle school with fees for “nicky” folders, writing journal, and recorder fee for Primary Center students. The only fee charged at the Intermediate Center is the dues to National Junior Beta ($25).

Director of Pupil Personal Garry Dewitt submitted to the Board for approval the master daily schedule---which includes the official school start and dismissal times. Students arriving after the official start time are counted as tardy.

At the Allen County Primary Center and Allen County Intermediate Center, school officially starts at 7:50.  At the Bazzell Middle School, the school day starts at 7:45 with the day starting at the Allen County-Scottsville High School at 7:40. Parents are reminded that breakfast---at no cost to every child in the District---is served prior to the start of the school day.

In the afternoons, school officially dismisses at 2:40 for the middle school, 2:50 at the high school, 3 p.m. at the Intermediate Center, and at 3:10 at the Primary Center.

Board members learned from the school principals that final preparations are underway for school to begin on August 9. At ACIC and ACPC, all teachers are in place. At Bazzell Middle School, an art teacher position remains to be filled with the high school still seeking a math teacher and an Exceptional Child Education teacher.

In his report to the Board, Superintendent Randall Jackson reminded the Board of each school’s Open House dates and times as well as a pair of key dates.
