Winter Guard Competes in Tennessee

The Allen County-Scottsville High School varsity and junior varsity winter guards opened the competition season Saturday taking part in a Southeastern Color Guard Circuit (SCGC) event at Independence High School in Thompson Station Tennessee.

The Axis varsity squad posted a score of 62.67 to place second in the eight-guard Scholastic AA competition. The White House (TN) winter guard captured top honors with a score of 63.98. Other units and their scores were Brentwood (61.05), Siegel (59.12), Spring Hill (57.44), John Overton (53.10), Hart County (52.65), and McGavock (47.56).

The AC-S junior varsity guard placed third in a four-guard field in the Scholastic Regional A competition. The JV unit scored 61.14. The division winner was Goodpasture (67.14) with Waverly (62.01) placing second.

Saturday’s Axis competition launched a new season with a theme centered on the lost colony of Roanoke Virginia from the mid-1500s. English settlers coming to join the colony could not locate the group with the only clue as to their disappearance being the word “Croatoan” carved into a tree---Croatoan being the name of a local Indian tribe. Axis’ performance, attire, and props revolves around the lost colony theme. The JV guard’s 2018 show revolves around a 1950s-style gender-roles performance based on the Jennifer Lopez song entitled “Ain’t Your Mama.”

Axis varsity and the junior varsity guard are registered for additional competitions at Summit High School in Spring Hill (TN) on March 3, Barren County on March 10, and Spring Hill High School in Spring Hill on March 24. AC-S will also participate in the SCGC championships scheduled for Saturday, April 7 at Western Kentucky University.
