Allen County-Scottsville High School junior
Madison Whittle has been selected to participate in the Governor’s School of
the Arts program this summer.
Whittle will be among 256 students who will
spend June 17 through July 7 on the campus of Centre College in Danville
learning more about their art and their “place as an artist.” Whittle was
selected in the Visual Art discipline.
Over
1,400 applications from across the Commonwealth were received for the annual
program. From the applications, GSA officials chose 663 individuals to showcase
their work in person. Last week, the GSA made their final selections for the
prestigious program.
The
256 selected students will spend six weeks engaged in the program. The GSA faculty of professional
artist/educators will guide the young artists through “three weeks of
incredibly intense (and incredibly fun) arts instruction.” Students will take
part in one of nine disciplines---Architecture Design, Creative Writing, Dance,
Drama, Instrumental Music, Musical Theatre, Film/Photography, Visual Art, and
Vocal Music.
The GSA was established as a program of The
Kentucky Center for the Arts and Kentucky Department of the Arts in the 1980s
under the leadership of Governor Martha Layne Collins and The Kentucky Center
President Marlow Burt. The first class included 120 students, attending
in six disciplines---Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Instrumental Music,
Visual Art, and Vocal Music.
