Lady Patriots Stand 9-7

Lady Patriots Stand 9-7

(by Don Meador, April 25, 2017)

Kalee Skaggs belted her fourth home run of the year---a grand slam in the second inning----to stake the Allen County-Scottsville Lady Patriots to a 5-0 lead over Glasgow, more than enough runs to defeat the Lady Scotties. However, seven runs ibn the next two innings left no doubt as AC-S cruised to a 12-1 victory last Wednesday.

Skaggs finished the day with six RBI’s on a team-high three hits. Taylor Stamps, Ryley Whitney, Madi Gregory, Allie Byrn, Kris-Anne Pardue, and Jaylee Woods also reached on singles in the game. Woods would score three times and RaeAnn Stafford also crossing the plate twice to help their team record the district win.

Glasgow threatened to get on the board first. Two walks and an error helped Glasgow load the bases in the top of the first. However, a running snag of a line drive by Woods in left field ended the threat. Glasgow would not score until pushing a run across in the top of the third but, by then, Glasgow was already behind.

The Lady Patriots went down without a whimper in the first inning but roared back with a strong second. Byrn and Pardue opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Stafford reached after being hit by a pitch. Woods followed with a walk that forced Byrn home. Jordan Anderson struck out setting the stage for Skaggs to follow with her grand slam---giving AC-S the 5-0 lead.

The Lady Patriots added three runs in the third. Stafford reached on an error, Woods singled, and Anderson walked. Skaggs’ two run single plated Stafford and Woods. Stamps followed with a single to load the bases. Whitney drew a walk, forcing Anderson home from third and giving AC-S the 8-1 lead.

A four-run fourth sealed the deal. Walks by Pardue, Woods, and Skaggs loaded the bases. Stamps grounded into a fielders’ choice allowing giving AC-S a 9-1 lead. Whitney followed with a two-out, two-run RBI single. Two more walks in the inning led to an additional run as AC-S took a 12-1 lead to the top of the fifth.

Lady Patriot pitcher Kris-Anne Pardue allowed a pair of two-out singles in the inning before a Glasgow groundout ended the game. Pardue finished with five innings of work, allowed four hits, and walked two. Pardue faced 23 batters and was head of 15 batters to start the at-bat. Glasgow pitcher Zole Ross allowed 12 AC-S runs on nine hits.

The rainy weekend kept the Lady Patriots (9-7) off the diamond for a scheduled slate of games at the Greenwood Border Battle in Bowling Green. As a result, AC-S will have almost a week off from games when the team returns to action. AC-S is scheduled to be at Glasgow (10-7) Thursday, at Owensboro Catholic (11-6) and at Boyle County (14-8) Saturday. Next week, the Lady Patriots travel to undefeated South Warren (17-0) on Tuesday.
