Patriots/Lady Patriots Advance in 2A

The Allen County-Scottsville Patriot and Lady Patriot basketball teams will play Saturday in the semifinals of the Kentucky Legend 2A Section I Championships. The Patriots advanced in the inaugural statewide event with a 77-75 overtime upset of Warren Central on Monday. The Lady Patriots downed Franklin-Simpson 56-33 Tuesday evening to move forward in the tournament.

Owen Stamper’s career-high 22 points led AC-S in Monday’s win over Warren Central. Brett Rippy added 21 points and dished out a career-best eight assists. Jax Cooper scored a career-high 18 points. Cooper scored on a put back basket at the end of regulation to force the extra four-minute period. Mason Shirley sank a 15-foot basket with 1.2 seconds left in the game to seal the win for the Patriots---the first over Warren Central since February 19, 2008.

Tuesday, Mason Towery scored 19 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and dished out six assists to help the Lady Patriots to the win. Her double-double was the sixth of her four-year AC-S career. Sarah Sutton added 17 points.

Sutton also surpassed the 2,000-point mark for her career, joining Morgan Rich (2,433) as the only Allen County-Scottsville student-athletes to have scored over 2,000 points. Earlier this season, Sutton surpassed 1,000 rebounds thus making her the only Lady Patriot player to have scored 2,000 points and grabbed 1,000 rebounds. Sutton has played in a school-record 168 games and made 135 career starts, three starts shy of the record for most starts in a career.

AC-S will play the winner of Thursday’s Webster County/Caldwell County game in both the boys and girls bracket Saturday at Hopkins County Central High School. Revised game times will be 4 p.m. for the Lady Patriots and at 6 p.m. for the Patriots.

The Lady Patriots (13-3, 1-1) and Patriots (14-2, 2-0) will return to the court for a key District 15 game at Glasgow on Friday. The Lady Scotties enter the game with a 12-3 overall record, 2-0 in District 15 play. The Scotties are 9-5 overall and 1-1 in district competition. Glasgow has also advanced to the 2A Championships Section I semifinals Saturday. Hence, Saturday wins by AC-S and Glasgow will result in the schools playing again on Sunday in the Section I championship.

If the Lady Patriots and/or Patriots reach the Section I finals Sunday, they will also advance to the 2A Championships’ state tournament starting on January 18 in Owensboro.
