Art Student Places Fourth in Art Competition

Allen County-Scottsville High School art student Katie Carver recently received fourth place in the state in the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Art Show for 2018. Her artwork---which took top honors at the local level last spring---depicts an image of an American soldier with multiple words included in the work.

“We had been studying micrography which is making images out of words that are associated with the image itself,” explained high school art educator Hope Adams. “In her work, Katie used an image of an American soldier from Desert Storm. She used the words of the Pledge of Allegiance in the image and quickly realized that was not enough. So, she used the JROTC and Army codes and other military codes to make up the words included in the image.”

Adams added that Carver also added a backdrop of the US flag.

“Her background was kind of plain, so I suggested the American flag,” Adams added “She used color and watercolor pencils to help her create the flag in the background.”

Carver art work received a $100 prize for first place at the local level. The next step was the district and regional VFW competitions. After top honors at both levels, her work was judged at the state level.

“Katie took a long time with this,” Adams said. “The theme is about Patriotism and ties in with the VFW itself. This was her way to show a patriotic image.”

Carver is a junior at Allen County-Scottsville.
