The Allen County-Scottsville High School guidance department has scheduled
three workshops to help parents/guardians and students fill out the FAFSA (Free
Application for Federal Student Aid). The workshops are for students who will
be attending college in the 2019-20 school year.
The FAFSA is a form that can be prepared annually by current and
prospective college students (undergraduate and graduate) to determine the
student’s eligibility for financial aid. Every family should complete the FASFA
as early as possible during a student’s senior year regardless of family income
and assets. Federal and state entitlement programs are available for every
student. The FAFSA is used to calculate the Estimated Family Contribution—the
amount that a family can reasonably afford to pay each year for higher
education.
Workshops will be held from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 16,
from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 18, and from 11:30 a.m. until 2
p.m. on Monday, November 5. Each workshop will be held in the Media Lab at
Allen County-Scottsville High School. Parents or students should contact guidance
counselor Laura Carter to schedule a time to attend.
Parents/guardians attending the workshop should provide or bring with
them the Social Security numbers for the each parent/guardian, their
birthdates, marriage status, anniversary date, a valid email address, divorce
date (if applicable), tax returns for 2017 (if filed in 2017), records and
documentation of other nontaxable income received, and additional financial
information such as current bank and brokerage statements.
A student attending the workshop should provide or bring with them their
Social Security number, birthdate, email address, any 2017 tax forms, driver’s
license, and Selective Service registration (if applicable).
Parents and students will also need a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID. This
can be obtained at the workshop or beforehand at FAFSA.gov. If the FSA ID is
obtained prior to the workshop, please bring the number with you. If a
parent/guardian has children who have previously completed a FAFSA, you will
need to bring the same FSA ID that was used for them.
Once the FAFSA is completed, parents/students should print a confirmation
page for their records and check email for a Student Aid Report and Expected
Family Contributions. The student should also begin to apply for colleges and scholarships
as soon as possible.
