Cheryl Miller is New Assistant Principal

(by Don Meador, Allen County Schools)

Allen County-Scottsville High School (AC-SH) will have a new assistant principal this year. Cheryl Miller brings 23 years of education experience to the high school after many years in the classroom at the Allen County Intermediate Center (ACIC).

Miller graduated from AC-SH in 1989 and attended college at the College of Charleston (SC). After receiving her Elementary Education Degree, Miller taught in Charleston, South Carolina for a year before returning to Allen County. Miller earned a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Western Kentucky University with an endorsement in Reading. Later, Miller earned her Rank I in Educational Administration for Grades K-12.

Her career with the Allen County School District started in November of 1995, teaching at the Allen County Primary Center. Miller taught at ACPC for 10 years before moving to the Allen County Intermediate Center where she has taught fifth grade for 13 years.

Despite having not been in a high school setting as a teacher, Miller views her new role as an opportunity to grow.

“I see this move as professional growth,” Miller explained. “Dealing with elementary students all of my career, I felt like this would be a professional growth experience. I will learn and see new things, but I have had some really good mentors through the years. They have passed that knowledge on and I hope I can continue to learn and grow.”

Miller is excited about the challenge that awaits as she steps into her new duties at the high school.

“This position is an instructional position and I have a strong background in that,” Miller said. “I was a teacher-leader at ACIC and was involved with the teacher Lighthouse Team with the Leader in Me program. I do bring a lot of experience in curriculum and best practices in instruction. I think that is what I have to offer here. I hope to promote student growth and achievement, build trusting relationships with teachers and staff members, and be here to help students academically.  I feel that’s what we, as teachers and administrators, have in common throughout this district, and that’s what I love about working here.”

One of the unique things about Miller coming to the high school is that she will see many of her former students.

“They will see the same Mrs. Miller that they saw in the classroom,” the new assistant principal said. “I love the kids and I’m excited to see my prior students. I’m looking forward to seeing their growth and what they are doing now.”

Away from school, Miller enjoys spending time with her husband (Billy) and daughter (Alyson). Her hobbies include reading, spending time at the lake, and time with her family.
