Four outstanding high school athletes and a
longtime supporter of Allen County-Scottsville sports have been selected for
the 2016 Allen County-Scottsville Athletic Hall of Fame. Former Patriot
basketball player Todd Harper, football player William Howard, Scottsville
basketball standout Les McDonald, softball star Jamie Ogles, and the long-time
Voice of the Patriots Danny Tabor will be inducted into the eighth Hall of Fame
class in ceremonies August 26.
Todd
Harper played basketball from 1977 until 1981 under coach Gary Shelton. During
his four-year career, AC-S posted a 75-26 record with Harper leading the Patriots
to a 44-13 record during his junior and senior seasons. Harper averaged 15.3
points as a junior before improving his scoring and rebounding as a senior. Behind
Harper’s 20.5 points and 10 rebounds per game, AC-S won the 1981 District 15
championship and the Region 4 tournament to advance to the state tournament for
the first time since 1970. AC-S finished the year 27-3 after losing in the opening
round of the state tournament. Harper earned All-District, All-Region honors
and was selected as a Third-Team All-State player. He finished his career with
a then-record 1,203 points. Harper would play for Campbellsville University for
a year following graduation and walk-on at Western Kentucky University for a season.
After graduating from WKU, Harper served as an assistant basketball coach at Franklin-Simpson
and later was an assistant with both the Patriot and Lady Patriot basketball
programs. Harper is a currently a business owner.
William
Howard continued a family football tradition in the late 1980s. Following
in the footsteps of his brothers, Howard was a four-year player from 1986 until
1990. Howard played for three head coaches (Royce Hood, Chuck Smith, and Jim
Tinius) and developed into a highly-recruited defensive end by his senior
season in 1989. The 6’4”, 210 lb. player recorded 120 solo tackles, blocked six
punts, recorded three tackles for safeties, and forced four fumbles in a 9-3
senior year. His play helped AC-S defeat rival Glasgow for the first time in
school history---a win that enabled AC-S to reach the post-season for the first
time in 17 years. Howard finished his staller career with nine blocked punts,
10 forced fumbles, four safeties, and 289 tackles---including 50 tackles behind
the line of scrimmage. Howard attended Western Kentucky University where he was
a five-year member of the Hilltopper football program. Howard has served as an
assistant coach as AC-S and Warren Central and was head coach at Barren County
in the mid-2000s. Howard currently serves as Defensive Coordinator for
Greenwood High School.
Les
McDonald played basketball for five seasons at Scottsville High School
under coach Lyle Dunbar. McDonald developed into a significant scoring threat
by his sophomore year---a season in which he averaged 19.6 points per game to lead
the Pointers to a 26-7 record. As a junior, McDonald averaged 18.2 points per
game as Scottsville went 24-6, captured the District 15 championship and
reached the region semifinals. As a senior in Scottsville’s last year as a
school in 1974, McDonald scored 760 points. The Pointers won the District 15
tournament, advanced to the Region 4 title game for the first time since 1948,
and finished the year with a 29-4 worksheet. McDonald would conclude his senior
campaign averaging 23 points and 14 rebounds per game, numbers that helped him
earn numerous All-District, All-Region, and tournament First Team awards. McDonald
finished his career as the all-time scorer for the Scottsville basketball
program with 2,164 points. He would play two years at Martin Junior College
before transferring to Campbellsville University for one season. McDonald is
now retired from a successful 26-year career in sales.
Jamie
Ogles was a mainstay for the Patriot Fastpitch program from 2001 until
2006---leading ACS to back-to-back Region 4 titles in 2004 and 2005. As a sophomore,
Ogles helped AC-S post a record of 30-10 under coach Rick Roberts. She would
earn Class 2-A Honorable Mention honors. The Lady Patriots repeated as regional
champions in 2005 with Ogles playing a key role as the team went 34-10 under
coach Brad Bonds. In addition to All-District and All-Region honors, she would
be named First Team All-State by the Kentucky Softball Coaches Association..
The 2006 season saw Ogles win 17 of her 22 starts as Patriot Fastpitch went
31-8-1. Her efforts earned her All-District and All-Region First Team awards.
Her high school career concluded with Ogles being named the 2006 Class 2-A
Kentucky softball Player of the Year. She finished her times at AC-S with an
overall record of 61-22, including a 19-2 record in post-season games and 5-0
in the state tournament. Ogles played two seasons at Kentucky Wesleyan---a
career in which she still shares the record for most starts in a season (22). Her
career was cut short by a torn rotator cuff injury in 2008. Ogles graduated
from Western Kentucky University in 2010, served in the Peace Corp, and is now in
the non-profit service sector in Louisville with Leadership of Southern Indiana.
Danny
Tabor began working at WLCK Radio in Scottsville as a 15-year old.
Graduation from Scottsville High School in 1973 was immediately followed by a
full-time air shift position when WOVO went on-air in Glasgow during the summer
of 1973. Tabor later worked at radio stations in Evansville Indiana and
Nashville Tennessee before returning to WOVO in the late 1970s. In the early
1980s, Tabor returned to WLCK as station manager and immediately began to take
the lead in broadcasting AC-S athletic events. Tabor brought WLCK AM/FM in
1985, launched WVLE FM, and insured quality local and community-oriented radio
programming until selling the station and retiring in 2007. His love for sports
coupled with his commitment to bringing quality play-by-play into homes led to
Tabor following AC-S football and basketball from Marshall County to Scott
County; from Louisville to London. Tabor has called numerous milestones in
Patriot sports, including the 1989 playoff-clinching football win over Glasgow
and Patriot basketball’s last state tournament run in 1996. In his 22 years as
station owner, Tabor was behind the mic for hundreds of AC-S football and
basketball games or behind the scene, assuring AC-S sport broadcasts would
continue on-air despite a dying trend in radio. Tabor was also the founding corporate
sponsor for the Lady Invitational of the South---an event that blossomed into Kentucky’s
premier girls basketball tournament for 25 years.
