Bazzell Students: Check Out Run Club

Efforts are underway to organize a run club for Kindergarten through eighth grade students, their parents, and faculty and staff of the Allen County School District.

“I have been told that there is a large interest in the elementary and middle school grades for students that want to run,” explained high school educator Matthew Holmes. “I want to motivate faculty and students to run.”

Holmes is a first-year educator in Allen County but has a strong background in running. For six years, he served as the cross country and track coach at Bowling Green Junior High School. Holmes is interested in helping the Allen County-Scottsville High School build the numbers for their cross country and track teams. Kentucky High School Athletic guidelines limit high school participation to middle and high school students only. However, Holmes sees the new run club as a way to create a running culture and, as a result, build for the future.

“I am passionate about building a winning program here at ACS,” Holmes added. “I would like to get the running interest up so that next year and in the coming years, we will have more runners that can participate in the high school program.”

The run club is open to any kindergarten through eighth grade student in the Allen County School District. Plans call for the students to run for two afternoons per week from 3:30 until 4:40. Runners must have physical form, comfortable running shoes, and a water bottle. Parents of students and members of the school district faculty and staff are welcome to participate in the club as well.

Students interested, and their parents, should attend an informational meeting on Monday, September 18 at 5:30 in the high school library.
