Pink Out Week Nets Over $4,300

Students, faculty, staff, and community members joined together to raise over $4,300 during the annual Pink Out Week activities last week at Allen County-Scottsville High School. The week asks students to reflect on the effects of cancer on family and friends and join others in the effort to find a cure.

“It was scary when they told me I had cancer,” explained Allen County School District employee and cancer survivor Suzie Weaver during remarks to high school students Friday. “You stop and think about life. You think will I be here a year from now or will I see my kids grow up”

Weaver’s husband Roger is also a District employee and a cancer survivor. Together, the couple fought different forms of cancer and the struggles associated with surgery, treatment, and recovery.

“Words cannot explain what we went through,” Suzie Weaver added. “I watched him suffer. It was terrible and I pray that none of you ever have to go through that---for yourself, your parents, or your friends. I am so thankful he was in God’s hands and not mine. I felt so small against his illness.”

The high school spearheaded a campaign to raise awareness and money in the on-going fight against cancer. The Pink Out Week featured several fundraising activities challenging students and staff to get involve and donate to the cause. Activities included t-shirt sales, a special Pink Out designed volleyball and football game, and a fun-filled Powder Puff football game pitting senior girls against junior girls.

For AC-S students and staff, the fundraising efforts included the spirited Kiss the Pig fundraiser sponsored by the Future Farmers of America chapter at the high school. Students and staff could donate money for their candidate to kiss a pig at halftime of the Powder Puff game. Paul Spears, Allen County Career and Technical Center educator, were the leading money getter and was given the honor to kiss the pig---a fundraising effort that generated approximately $1,600.

The money collected from the week was presented to the local Allen County Relay For Life program which, in turn, will forward the money to the American Cancer Society.
