A-Team Places Second in District Overall

Allen County-Scottsville High School will have eight students taking part in the 2018 Regional Governor’s Cup competition next month. The students were part of a top two-team or a top-five individual in the District 14 Governor’s Cup academic competitions Saturday at AC-SH.

The Future Problem Solving (FPS) team of Maggie Adams, Chance Baldwin, Tayte Hawkins, and Jackson Montgomery placed second in the competition against students from Barren County, Glasgow, and Hart County. The FPS team is coached by AC-SH educator Codey Baskett.

“Students are handed a scene that involves a time, place, and event set in the future,” AC-SH academic team coach Adam Crabtree explained. “The scene always has a charge which is a statement to the teams that they have to identify challenges and possible solutions for the situation in the scene. The scene could be about various things such as natural disasters, environmental issues, technology issues, etc. This event depends heavily on students creative thinking and writing skills.”

In individual events, Tyler Hunt placed second in science, Chance Baldwin was third in composition, Aaron Borth finished fourth in composition, Jason Sikes was fourth in mathematics, and Madison Whittle placed fifth in Language Arts.

The AC-SH Quick Recall team of William Gregory, Tyler Hunt, Jason Sikes, and Madison Whittle was third in the four-team competition. The AC-S squad dropped their opening round match to Barren County, bounced back with a win over Hart County, and fell to Barren County a second time in the double-elimination bracket format. Glasgow downed Barren County to finish as District Quick Recall champions.

“Overall ACSHS was the District 14 Runner-Up for the first time since 2007,” Crabtree added. “I am so proud of my kids and their hard work this year.  I look forward to improving next year and recruiting new faces to help our team grow as a whole.”

The Region Governor’s Cup competitions will be held on February 12 and February 17 at South Warren High School in Bowling Green.
