Recap of Board of Education Meeting

   The Allen County Board of Education met in regular session on Monday, June 20, at 6 p.m. at the center office. The meeting included updates from principals at each school in the District.

   Joseph Cosby, the principal at the Allen County Career and Technical Center, noted that about 80 percent of seniors in the graduating class of 2016 were college ready, career ready, or both. The 80 percent mark represented an increase from the 62.6 percent mark in 2015. Cosby also explained that 87 rising seniors have already obtained college or career ready status.

   Allen County-Scottsville High School principal Shane Davis briefed the Board on various summer trip and activities underway for high school students.

   Allen County Intermediate Center principal Shawn Holland explained that over 60 Junior Beta students from the school will leave on Wednesday, June 22, for a five-day trip to the National Junior Beta Convention in New Orleans. Holland also notd that five new teachers have been hired for the new school year.

   Allen County Primary Center principal Tim Wilson added that his school will have eight new faces in the building when school starts in August.

   Melissa Towery, the principal of the James E. Bazzell Middle School noted that renovation has started at the school. Clark Towery, Director of Maintenance for the District, shared pictures with the Board from the first eight days of work on the school.

   Superintendent Randall Jackson told the Board that the final yearly attendance numbers for the 2015-16 school year slowed a slight decrease from the preceding year. The District finished with an average daily attendance of 94.32%, a drop from the 94.52% mark of the 2014-15 school year.

In action items, the Board:

  • Approved budget amendments for the 2015-16 school year.
  • Approved the Bond of Depository with South Central Bank.
  • Approved the school nurse contract with the Allen County Health Department for the 2016-17 school year in the total amount of $72,415.
  • Approved the employment of English, Lucas, Priest, and Owsley for legal services for the 2016-17 school year.
  • Approved advertising for blanket purchase agreements.
  • Approved a list of textbooks and furniture to declare as surplus.
  • Approved the District Assurances, declaring that all schools in the District are in compliance with the assurances listed with the state.
  • Approved a pay request from Sherman, Carter, Barnhart architects in the amount of $61,364.06.
  • Approved the donation of surplus items to the Fountain Run Christian School.

   The next Board of Education meeting will be Monday, July 18 at 6 p.m. at the central office.
