Student Selected for Schools for the Arts

      Allen County-Scottsville High School junior Michael Mason has been selected to participate in the 2014 Governors School for the Arts program this summer. Mason is the first student from AC-SH to be selected for the prestigious program in several years.

   According to the Governor’s School for the Arts website, students selected will  “live, breathe, eat and sleep the arts.” GSA and the faculty of professional artist/educators guide over 200 of the Commonwealth’s finest young artists through three weeks of intense and incredibly fun arts instruction  GSA auditions promising high school sophomores and juniors in nine different arts disciplines: Architecture, Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Instrumental Music, Musical Theatre, New Media, Visual Art and Vocal Music.

   The website adds that graduates of the summer program are eligible for a host of scholarships and educational opportunities in all fields of study. In addition, statistics show that 97 percent of GSA participants go on to attend college, 99 percent earn scholarships with the average GSA alumni scholarship amount standing at $59,000.
