The Patriot Academic Team participated in the District 14 Governor’s Cup Competition on Saturday hosted by Barren County High School. Schools attending included Hart County, Glasgow, Barren County, and Allen County – Scottsville. The competition consisted of five written exams (mathematics, science, social studies, arts/humanities and language arts), a composition event, Future Problem Solving Program and a Quick Recall double elimination tournament.
Students must place among the top five in an individual competition at the district level to advance to the Regional Governor’s Cup competition to be held on February 18th at South Warren High School in Bowling Green. The top two teams advance in Future Problem Solving and Quick Recall.
The Patriots had five top five finishes in the written exams and all will advance to regionals. Senior Ty Foster medaled in two events, placing third in science and fourth in social studies. Senior Coby Bessinger was fourth in science, junior Olivia Hawkins was fifth in language arts, and sophomore Jason Sikes was fifth in mathematics.
The quick recall team drew Glasgow High School in the first round of the double elimination tournament. Glasgow won this contest (51-14) sending the Patriots into the loser’s bracket. Allen County scored wins over Hart County (30-8) and Barren County (27-14) to get back to the finals. In the finals, the Patriots were again defeated by Glasgow (47-7) to finish in second place. Their second place finish will allow them to advance to the regionals for the first time in eight years. Quick Recall members included Ty Foster, Coby Bessinger, Olivia Hawkins, Jason Sikes, Tyler Hunt, Chuck Boucher, Madison Whittle, Jackson Montgomery and Colton Barton.
In the overall team competition, Allen County finished third. Glasgow High school repeated as District Champion and Barren County was Runner-up.
Governor’s Cup is hosted by the Kentucky Association for Academic Competitions. “Governor’s Cup was founded in 1986 as a way to promote, reward and recognize outstanding academic achievement. Since then, over a quarter of a million students have taken part in the event.
Governor’s Cup has become the state’s premier academic event, involving over 20,000 students, nearly 1200 schools, and thousands of coaches, administrators, parents and community leaders who see the rewards gained from encouraging academic performance through properly structured and professionally administered academic competition. – KAAC website ” Allen County has historically been very competitive in the Governor’s Cup Competitions. The Patriots have won the district eight times with four region championships dating back to 1986. Allen County won its last district championship in 1999 and last regional championship in 1998.
