Science Focus of G/T Summer Program

Students in the Gifted and Talented (G/T) Program in the Allen County School District had the opportunity this summer to learn about the fascinating world of science. Working in partnership with nationally-renowned science educator Jason Lindsey, 90 G/T students were challanged to dive into science during their two-month break from school.

“When the students went home for the summer, Jason and I put together a five week unit plan for them,” explained Vicki Cooper, Gifted and Talented Coordinator for Allen County Schools. “Each week, they learned specific science concepts that go along with the science standards. Jason also connected reading literature with at least two books. The kids were able to do experiments and learn different things. They had to use the scientific method for every experiment. I can’t say for sure how many kids actually participated but I know that many did from actually talking with them or with their parents.”

The capstone event for the project was this week as Lindsey brought his “Hooked on Science” program to the students. The parent-involvement component of the project required a parent, guardian, or family member to attend the three-hour program---a program that allowed students and family members to engage together in intriguing hands-on scientific challenges.

Students and family members said the summer G/T project was both fun and educational.

“I have learned that the stuff we’ve done is more than just having fun,” explained student Katie West. “It’s learning.”

“She has a love of science,” added Katie’s mother, Leann. “The more she sees, the more she gets involved and the more she wants to do more science. I think that’s the best part.”

Similar feelings were shared by students Leah Hartman and Austin Stinson.

“I have learned that science is an amazing thing,” noted Hartman. “You can learn lots from it.”

“Science is amazing and such a fun subject,” added Stinson. “It’s endless possibilities.”

The father of student Wyatt Smith explained that the summer project engaged his son.

“It’s absolutely helped my son get involved in science.” noted parent Joshua Smith. “I think the kids have learned a lot.

The Hooked on Science presentation by Lindsey---one of only seven STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Certified™ Master Trainers in America----included demonstrations of multiple scientific principals such as weight distribution, air flow, suction, friction, balance, magnets, and conductivity.
