The Kentucky High School Athletic
Association (KHSAA) has green lighted the start dates for fall sports.
Meeting in a special session Tuesday
morning, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Board of Control first
elected to move forward with fall sports but pushed back the start of official
practice and games in the sports of volleyball, soccer, cross country, field
hockey, cheer, dance, and football.
In dealing with volleyball, field hockey,
soccer, and cross country, the Board voted to allow limited practice to start
on Monday, August 24. For that week, student-athletes are limited to a total of
six hours of work. The following week, practice can be held at usual.
Competitions can begin on Monday, September 11.
The Board also approved Board approves a motion to set the
starting date for competitive cheer and Dance at August 24. The action also
included a strong recommendation that all activity be held outdoors where
safety equipment and conditions will permit.
Concerning football,
the Board approved August 24 at the first day that teams may practice in
helmets only. Normal practice progression can follow the following week with
first games allowed on Friday, September 11. The playoffs will begin a week
later (November 13 or November 14 ) leaving schools with the opportunity for a
nine-game schedule. As of now, the playoffs will be as normal with the
championships scheduled for December 11 or December 12 in Lexington.
Games originally scheduled for the weeks of August 21 and August 28 and September 4 will be canceled but may be rescheduled on the added week or during a team’s open date. This schedule will keep district games as originally planned as schools due not begin district play until later in September.
The Board also took
action to limit where and who teams play. The Board approved a motion that says
that KHSAA member school may only play schools located in Kentucky or located
in a county that directly borders Kentucky.
Additionally, the
Board approved a motion that no more than eight teams could participate ina
tournament in the team sports of baseball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, of
softball until further notice.
Today’s action by the KHSAA will mean changes to the fall sports calendar’s at AC-S. The Lady Patriot volleyball team was scheduled to start on August 17. The team was to have played seven games and participate in a tournament before September 7. Under the current schedule, the ACS volleyball team’s first date after September 7 is a September 10 match at Monroe County. More information on schedule changes will be forthcoming.
For football, the Patriots were scheduled to start the season on August 21 against LaRue County at the Scottie Bowl in Glasgow. AC-S also had games scheduled against Boyle County (August 29) and Greenwood (September 4). No word if any of those contests will be rescheduled. AC-S is slated to travel to Glasgow on September 11. The Patriots also had an open date on October 9. More information will be forthcoming.
