Family Literacy Program Planned at AC-SH

(by Don Meador, Allen County Schools)

A new program for students and their parents is being spearheaded by the English Department at the Allen County-Scottsville High School. The Family Literacy Program is designed to promote reading in the home between family members.

“At ACS-HS, we strive to provide the best reading and writing instruction possible, but we also know that students are greatly influenced by factors outside of the school, such as family, siblings, and friends, those who mean the most to them,” explained high school English teacher Heather Pierce. “With the Family Literacy Program, we hope to give parents a positive way to interact with their child, other parents, and other students in the school. Research has proven that parents are one of the greatest influences in a child’s academic success. By getting parents involved in the school activities made available through the literacy program, we hope to see greater motivation for learning among students, stronger relationships within families, and a positive discussions about reading, writing, and goal-setting among parents, students, and teachers.”

The program will have several activities available, based on parent interest.

“The activities include a Family Reading Challenge, a Parent-Student-Teacher Book Club, and  Workplace Literacy/Employability Skills Training (for parents and students),” Pierce added.

The goal of the new program is also to help families cultivate a love for reading and writing that will become a vital part of their lives.

“Just as children learn to love the same sports and television shows their family enjoys and talks about, we hope to grow a love for reading and writing among families through positive discussion of books and workplace literacy,” Pierce pointed out. “Students are empowered and find greater success when they have strong reading, writing, and comprehension skills, so we hope to nourish their growth by providing opportunities for positive family interactions as well."
