Patriot Soccer Records First Win

soccer 2

The Allen County-Scottsville Patriot soccer team tasted victory for the first time in program history last week. After 23 games without a win, goals by Tony Verdenime, Andrew Woods, and Aaron Shain lifted AC-S to a 3-2 win at Monroe County on September 28.

The match was close throughout. However, in the final two minutes, Shain broke through to score what proved to be the game winner over the Falcons. Senior goalkeeper Leon Wielawski recorded 18 saves in the match to aid the cause.

Saturday, the Patriots ended their season with a 8-1 setback to Barren County. The Trojans raced to a 5-0 halftime lead before outsourcing AC-S 3-1 over the final 40 minutes to record the win and move into the finals of the District 15 tournament at the Glasgow Soccer Complex in Glasgow.

The lone goal of the game was by Shain. Seeing limited action due to a rib injury---an injury which is believed to have occurred during the summer but only discovered after the Monroe County match--Shain scored for AC-S (1-16) off a free kick in the final minutes of the match. His goal was his sixth of the season---six of the 12 goals scored by AC-S in their 17 matches.

Following the game, Patriots Trevor Huizinga and Sammy Jines were named to the all-tournament team. The pair played solid defense and led the offensive charge against the Trojans. Wielawski had an outstanding game in net, recording 39 saves. For the season, Wielawski recorded 286 saves in 13 matches, an average of 22 per match.

The loss marked the end of the career for Wielawski, Ethan Farris, Austin Stinson, and Huston Wilkins.
