James E. Bazzell Middle School (JEBMS) will welcome an 11-year veteran to their eighth grade math department when school starts on August 7. Katie Harmon, a 2008 Allen County-Scottsville graduate, shifts from the Allen County Intermediate Center to the school she attended as a child growing up in Allen County.
Harmon’s passion for school started at an early age with several educators helping to guide her into the educational field.
“I have always loved school,” Harmon noted. “As a child I would be so excited for the start of the school year that I couldn’t sleep the night before. When I was a student at WKU and trying to decide a major, I began to think about my interests and passions. The only things that came to mind are learning, helping others and my love of school. Teachers like Cynthia Carter, Marietta Napier, Susan Williams, Stephanie Brown, and Donna Smith certainly developed my love of learning.”
The new Bazzell teacher says her students will find her classroom to be open and welcoming.
“This year, you can expect a classroom built on respect, fairness, and high expectations,” Harmon said. “I will challenge you to grow while supporting you every step of the way. We’ll build a consistent, positive environment where mistakes are part of learning and your voice matters. Our lessons will be engaging, meaningful, and designed to help you succeed—not just in school, but in life. Most importantly, I’ll show up each day with honesty, empathy, and a commitment to helping you be your best.”
Harmon’s journey to JEBMS has included several stops.
“I taught seventh grade math at Macon County Junior High for seven years,” Harmon said. “I taught fifth grade math for one year at ACIC and then I taught sixth grade math for four years at ACIC.”
Away from the classroom, Harmon’s interests revolve around her family.
“I enjoy reading, spending quality time with my family, and watching my kids play and grow,” Harmon pointed out. “These simple moments bring me the most joy and help keep life balanced and meaningful. I’ve been married to my husband, Blake, for ten years. We have three boys, a two year old and twins that are nine. Life is busy, loud, and full of laughs. Blake works at Simpson Co-op and also farms, so there’s always something going on—but we wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Harmon has a Bachelors of Science in Middle Grades Mathematics from WKU. She is currently pursuing her Rank One through Elevate Academy.
