Barren County

The Allen County-Scottsville Lady Patriot volleyball team recorded 23 service aces and 24 kill shots in a 3-0 (25-9, 25-4, 25-14) win over Barren County on Monday night in the opening round of the District 15 tournament at Patriot Gym.

“Our servers were hitting their zones tonight,” coach Shelby Keegan said. “That was a goal for us tonight, to come out really strong with our serves. If they can pass and receive then they cannot attack.”

Barren County stayed close in the first few points of the first set. However, Averie Pitchford turned the tables. Starting her serve in a 5-5 tie, Pitchford found her marks. Behind service aces and well played returns by her teammates, AC-S outscored Barren County 10-0. AC-S went on to take the first set 25-9.

The second set was simply a “beat down” for the Lady Patriots. Strong serving by Meg Foster---helping AC-S to 17 consecutive points---powered the Lady Patriots to a 25-4 set win.

After dominating for the better part of the first two sets, a lapse in play allowed Barren County the opportunity to get back in the match early in the third. The Trojanettes responded by opening a 10-5 lead. However, AC-S regrouped and outscored Barren County 20-9 the rest of the way to take the match.

“I was really proud of how we responded when we got down,” Keegan explained. “In this game, it can be very easy to lose momentum and that get in your head. I was proud that they picked each other back up, didn’t lose their cool, and continued to hustle.”
