EL

English Learners

English learners (ELs) are those students aged 3-21 whose primary language is a language other than English. ELs enter Kentucky schools with a variety of language backgrounds, educational experiences, and levels of English proficiency.  As a member of the WIDA consortium, Kentucky uses WIDA’s ACCESS for ELLs as the annual ELP assessment.

Our district strives to create classrooms that are culturally responsive and highlights the assets each learner brings to our school community.  We recognize this requires activating student prior knowledge, providing inviting spaces for communication and collaboration that establish relationships between peers and teachers as well as creating opportunities to leverage cultural wealth for our learner’s success.  Each school has EL staff to support our English Learners. Additionally, we partner with the local educational cooperative’s EL Consultant and Diversity, Inclusion, Equity and Belonging Coordinator to learn and grow in our service to providing quality and equitable learning experiences for not only our EL population, but for all kids.  You will find a printout below for sample classroom practices to help support our English Learners.
