Axis Participates in WGI Regional in Knoxville

The Axis winter guard from Allen County-Scottsville High School placed eighth in a field of 22 guards Saturday at the Winter Guard International Knoxville Regionals in Knoxville, Tennessee.   The prestigious competition featured guards from eight states; Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

In the preliminary round, AC-S earned a score of 71.28 to place 10th. Green Hope High School from Cary, North Carolina captured preliminary honors with a score of 75.19.

The score and placement earned the guard the opportunity to compete in the finals portion of the program Saturday evening. In competition against 10 guards, AC-S’s unit earned a score of 70.36, eighth overall in the finals. Fort Mill High School from South Carolina recorded a score of 76.68 to win the competition.

This year, Axis’ routine is centered on the lost colony of Roanoke Virginia from the mid-1500s. English settlers coming to join the colony could not locate the group with the only clue as to their disappearance being the word “Croatoan” carved into a tree---Croatoan being the name of a local Indian tribe. Axis’ performance, attire, and props revolves around the lost colony theme. The JV guard’s 2018 show revolves around a 1950s-style gender-roles performance based on the Jennifer Lopez song entitled “Ain’t Your Mama.”

The Axis varsity and the junior varsity guards are registered for additional competitions at Summit High School in Spring Hill (TN) on March 3, Barren County on March 10, and Spring Hill High School in Spring Hill on March 24. AC-S will also participate in the Southeastern Color Guard Circuit championships scheduled for Saturday, April 7 at Western Kentucky University.
