The Axis winter guard from Allen County-Scottsville High School captured first place honors in the Scholastic AA class Saturday at the Southeastern Color Guard Circuit championships at Western Kentucky University. The championship is the guard’s third title in the past four seasons.

Axis earned a score of 83.44 for their gold-award championship performance Saturday evening at Diddle Arena. White House (TN) received a silver award for second place, finishing with a score of 81.14. South Paw (MS) captured bronze with a score of 80.46. The class included 15 guards representing the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee. By their first place, Axis was also crowned Kentucky state champion.

Axis’ routine was centered on the lost colony of Roanoke Virginia---a group of pioneers in  America in the mid-1500s. English settlers coming to join the colony could not locate the group with the only clue as to their disappearance being the word “Croatoan” carved into a tree---Croatoan being the name of a local Indian tribe. Axis’ performance, attire, and props revolves around the lost colony theme.

The guard’s members include seniors Tayte Hawkins, Rachel Marsh, and Gabby Veron. Juniors are Shayla Anderson, Johnathan Carter, Allie Sims, Maelie Stovall, and Alex Ward. Sophomore Axis members include Katie Davis, Kaylee Langman, and Bailey Perdue. Freshman guard members are Abigail Gann, Olivia Harwood, Taylor Beth Huff, Emma Robison, Shea Robison, Abigail Stamps, and Jorja Tuttle.

The AC-SH junior varsity guard placed fourth in the nine-guard Scholastic Region AA class. The JV unit earned a score of 77.50. Susan Moore (AL) placed first in the class with a score of 79.31. McCracken County was second (77.74) followed by third place Helena (AL) with a final score of 77.72. The JV guard was second among Kentucky participants.

The JV guard’s show revolved around a 1950s-style gender-roles performance based on the Jennifer Lopez song entitled “Ain’t Your Mama.” JV guard members included sophomores Sno Browning and Danesha Martin, freshman Cara Gass, Ava Noe, Kierra Owens, Juliya Villarreal, and Madison Wilson, eighth-graders Alexa Anderson, Lanie Hawkins, and Abby Lemert, seventh-graders Katie Calvert, Kerlandy Carver, Emily Coulter, and Callie Gass, and sixth graders Alexis Anderson, Shayna Britt, Mattea Cromer, and Claire Robison.

The guards are under the leadership of Director Gina Huff and assistants Shawn Huff, Chelly Taylor-Stamps, and Sasha Griffin.
