Read-A-Thon Winners Announced

(by Don Meador, Allen County Schools, Public Relations)

Students at the Allen County Primary Center read 2,877 books and raised $9,952.87 in last month’s Read-A-Thon at the school.

"You all did an awesome job in our Read-A-Thon,” Primary Center principal Tim Wilson told the students Monday morning prior to announcing the winners of the February event, sponsored in conjunction with the Primary Center’s Parent-Teacher Organization.

The month-long event was designed to help the school complete the purchase of the reading program, “Being A Reader”---a computer-based program that help the school teach small group reading more effectively. Starting in late January, kindergarten through third grade students took pledges from family members or sponsors---pledges for donations based on the number of books read in February. The students collected their donations between March 1 and March 3. Monday, the top readers were announced with individual winning students earning a gift card.

Third-grade student Jaxen Carver was the overall winner in terms of money collected, receiving $259 for reading 82 books. Carver also was the third grade class winner for books read and money collected.

For second grade, Ava Stanger was the winner for most books read (189) and most money raised ($200).

Among first grade students, Cannon Hood read the most books (62) with Abby Ledoux raising the most money (70).

For kindergarten students, Peyton Howard read 300 books to lead the way in books read. Michael Whobrey raised the most in pledges ($178). Kindergarten students were allowed to count book read or books that parents may have read to them since reading skills are still in the developmental stage.

In addition, the classroom that raised the most money was the second-grade classroom of Louella Hite. Mrs. Hite’s classroom collected $581 in pledges. The class will be rewarded with pizza/movie time.

Each student was challenged to raise $28. Overall, 167 students reached the goal and will receive a snow cone later in the spring.
