Kaleigh Shaw is DYW 2018

  Allen County-Scottsville senior Kaleigh Beth Shaw has been chosen as the 2018 Allen County Distinguished Young Woman. Her selection concludes months of work by 10 candidates in the annual Distinguished Young Women (DYW) scholarship program.

  Shaw will receive multiple scholarship opportunities. In addition to the $1,000 cash scholarship from the Friends of DYW Scholarship Fund, Shaw earned her choice of a $3,000 per year scholarship from Kentucky Wesleyan College, a $3,000 per year scholarship from Campbellsville University, or a $4,000 scholarship from the Galen College of Nursing.

  Shaw also was the program’s scholastic winner. As a result, Shaw will receive a $400 cash scholarship as well as a $3,500 per year scholarship from Lindsey Wilson, a $3,000 per year scholarship from Campbellsville, a $1,5000 cash scholarship from St. Catherine College, or a $3,000 per year scholarship from Galen College of Nursing.

  In other categories, Shaw was the winner of self-expression, earning a $250 cash scholarship, and runner-up in the talent portion of the program, receiving a $100 cash scholarship. Shaw also was named as the Be Your Best Self Award winner ($100 cash scholarship).

  Abigail Keen was selected as first alternate. Keen receives a $700 cash scholarship from the Friends of DYW fund and her choice of a $2,500 per year scholarship to Kentucky Wesleyan, $2,500 per year from Campbellsville, of a $3,000 per year scholarship from Galen College of Nursing. Keen also was the overall winner in talent ($400 cash scholarship) and runner-up in self-expression ($100 cash scholarship sponsored by Col. And Mrs. Ron Turner) and interview ($100 cash scholarship sponsored by Wilson and Lana Jo Stone).

  Maggie Adams was chosen second alternate. Adams received a $500 cash scholarship from Friends of DYW, a $2,000 per year cash scholarship from Kentucky Wesleyan, and $2,000 per year cash scholarship from Campbellsville. Adams also received a $500 cash scholarship from her selection as the winner of the Todd Gibbs Memorial Interview Award (sponsored by Allen County Homemakers). Adams was also runner-up in fitness ($100 cash scholarship) and received a $100 cash scholarship as the recipient of the Scottsville Women’s Club Community Service Award.

  Other cash scholarship winners included Taylor Stamps ($250) for winning the fitness category and Nicole Carver---the winner of the $250 cash scholarship Gabbi Doolin Spirit of Junior Miss Award (sponsored by the Doolin family). In addition, participants Maggie Adams, Nicole Carver, Abigail Keen, Haley Marsh, Rachel Meador, Kaleigh Shaw, Madison Spradlin, Taylor Stamps, Mckenzie Stout, and Katelyn Traughber will each receive a $1,000 per year scholarship to Kentucky Wesleyan, $6,000-$10,000 scholarship to Randolph College, or a $1,000 per year scholarship to Lindsey Wilson.

  The DYW program evaluates candidates in five categories. The scholastic portion counts for 20 percent of the overall school. Interview and Talent accounts for 25 percent of the final score while fitness and self-expression counts 15 percent of the overall score.

  Shaw will represent Allen County at the state DYW program in January in Lexington. Shaw is Allen Count’s 46th Distinguished Young Woman since the program---formally known as Junior Miss---started in 1970.
