Axis Winter Guard Places First, Preps for Championships

  The Axis winter guards representing Allen County-Scottsville High School placed first last Saturday at the final regular season winter guard competition of the Southeastern Color Guard Circuit (SCGC) at Siegel High School in Murfreesboro Tennessee. Both the Axis varsity and junior varsity guards will complete the 2017 season this Saturday at the SCGC championships at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green.

In the varsity competition last Saturday, Axis earned a score of 74.63 to capture top honors in Scholastic AAA field of four guards from Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Lawrence County (TN) placed second with a score of 74.47.

Members of Axis varsity include Andy Apple, Courtney Meadows, Katie Whelchel, Andrea Gagen, Tayte Hawkins, Rachel Marsh, Gabby Veron, Shayla Anderson, Johnathan Carter, Allie Sims, Maelie Stovall, Alex Ward, Katie Davis, Robin Gagen, Kaylee Langman, Shelby Pearson, Bailey Pardue, Taylor Beth Huff and Abigail Stamps.

In the Junior Varsity (JV) competition, Axis placed first in the seven guard field. The junior guard had a score of 79.71 edging Waverly (TN) winter guard who finished with a 77.31 mark.

Junior varsity guard members include Sno Browning, Rhiley Cross, Danesha Martin, Savannah Shivers, Abigail Gann, Cara Gass, Olivia Harwood, Emma Robison, Shea Robison, Taylor Rookstool, Jorja Tuttle, Juliya Villarreal, Reagan Fletcher, Lanie Hawkins, Alec Johnson, Abby Lemert, Katie Calvert, Kerlandy Carver, Emily Coulter, and Claire Robison.

The guards---both ranked first headed into this weekend---will complete Saturday in the championships at WKU. According to the SCGC website, the Axis junior varsity guard will perform at 12:38 p.m. on the floor at E.A. Diddle Arena. Axis JV will be in competition against Ohio County (KY), Smith County (TN), Warren County (TN), Coffee County (TN), Sparkman (AL), Wilson Central (TN), Thompson (AL), Helena (AL), and Waverly (TN).

The Axis varsity unit will compete against 11 schools in their class; Oak Grove (AL), Madisonville-North Hopkins (KY), Spring Gill (TN), Centennial (TN), Siegel (TN), Athens (AL), Daviess County (KY), Apollo (KY), Summit (TN), Lawrence County (TN), and South Paw (MS). Axis is scheduled to take the floor at 6:28 p.m. Saturday evening at Western Kentucky University.

Saturday’s competition marks the first time that WKU has hosted the SCGC championships. The daylong event will feature over 80 winter guards representing schools from Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee. The competition is broken down into 10 divisions. The first guard will perform at 8:30 a.m. with the final guard slated to take the floor at 9:26 Saturday evening. Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for students (with ID) and free for children under age five.
