(By Don Meador, Public Relations Coordinator, Allen County School District)

The Axis Junior Varsity winter guard representing Allen County-Scottsville High School placed first last Saturday in the Scholastic Regional AA-White Division at the Southeastern Color Guard Circuit (SCGC) championships at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. The Axis varsity winter guard finished as runner-up in the Scholastic AAA division.

The Axis Junior varsity earned a score of 81.70 to take the top honor in their division. Waverly (TN) placed second in the competition with a score of 79.40. The division featured 10 schools from the states of Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee and included one other Kentucky school (Ohio County). The additional schools were Smith County (TN), Warren County (TN), Coffee County (TN), Sparkman (AL), Wilson Central (TN), Thompson (AL), Helena (AL), and Waverly (TN).

Junior varsity guard members include Sno Browning, Rhiley Cross, Danesha Martin, Savannah Shivers, Abigail Gann, Cara Gass, Olivia Harwood, Emma Robison, Shea Robison, Taylor Rookstool, Jorja Tuttle, Juliya Villarreal, Reagan Fletcher, Lanie Hawkins, Alec Johnson, Abby Lemert, Katie Calvert, Kerlandy Carver, Emily Coulter, and Claire Robison.

The Axis varsity squad---including members Andy Apple, Courtney Meadows, Katie Whelchel, Andrea Gagen, Tayte Hawkins, Rachel Marsh, Gabby Veron, Shayla Anderson, Johnathan Carter, Allie Sims, Maelie Stovall, Alex Ward, Katie Davis, Robin Gagen, Kaylee Langman, Shelby Pearson, Bailey Pardue, Taylor Beth Huff and Abigail Stamps---missed the overall division championship by a very small margin.

AC-S’s final score of 75.75 was just .15 points behind the top score of 75.90 posted by Lawrence County (TN). AC-S did post the top score among the four Kentucky schools in the division---AC-S, Apollo, Daviess County, and Madisonville-North Hopkins—and thus claimed the honor of top guard from the state of Kentucky. The Scholastic AAS Division featured a total of 12 schools---Oak Grove (AL), Madisonville-North Hopkins (KY), Spring Gill (TN), Centennial (TN), Siegel (TN), Athens (AL), Daviess County (KY), Apollo (KY), Summit (TN), Lawrence County (TN), and South Paw (MS).

The competitions signaled the end of the winter color guard season. Guard members will join AC-S band members in initial preparations in the coming weeks for the 2017 fall marching band festival season.
