Allen County Special Olympians Recognized

Despite rain that delayed and later canceled most of the Region Special Olympics games last Saturday at Bowling Green High School, an Allen County student, two Allen County coaches, and an Allen County family were presented with special awards.

“Senior Misty McClusky received the Jo Verner Courage Award,” noted Pat Witcher, a coach for the 33 Allen County Special Olympians representing Allen County Schools. “The Coach of the Year Award was presented to Vickie Warren, the Clark R. Verner Award was presented to Tracy Butler and The Family of the Year recognition was given to Mary Alford, the family of Sophia Alford.”

The special recognitions were part of the day in which Special Olympians from 17 counties were scheduled to compete in a variety of athletic competitions. Early day rain forced the event to be shortened to mainly the opening ceremony but the showers could not damper the spirits of the participants.

“The sun shined bright through our athletes smiles even though the day was cut short,” Witcher noted. “A lot of hard work went into making this event take place. We so thankful for the athletes, 60 buddies from the Bazzell Middle School, and Allen County-Scottsville High School, the community and all the coaches. It was also good to see Collado Independent, Logsdon Independent, Foster Independent, and Whitney Independent representing Allen County, too.”

The Kentucky State Summer Games will be held June 2-4 at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.
