Lady Patriots Ousted in Region Semifinals

ACS vs. Franklin-Simpson

   The Allen County-Scottsville Lady Patriot softball team bounced back from their 1-0 loss to Barren County in last week’s District 15 championship game with a 9-1 win over Franklin-Simpson in the first round of the District 15 tournament Monday afternoon at Western Kentucky University. 

Taylor Stamps led the way for the Lady Patriots. The junior right-fielder recorded three hits and three RBI’s to help AC-S to their 18th win of the year. Kalee Skaggs, and Jordan Anderson added two hits---part of an afternoon in which AC-S batters ripped 11 hits against the Lady Cats.

Skaggs led off the game with a triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryley Whitney. Two innings later, a five-run third broke the game open. A double by Ally Byrn would be followed by an RBI double by Anderson. After Skaggs reached on a Franklin-Simpson error, Woods’ sacrifice left Skaggs and Anderson in scoring position. Whitney drew a walk with Stamps’ following with a single. Madi Gregory ripped AC-S third double of the inning to plate Skaggs, Kassi Bullington, and Stamps and lift AC-S to a 6-0 lead.

The Lady Cats (18-15) got on the board with a run in the bottom of the third but AC-S answered with an additional two runs in the top of the third. After Skaggs reached on a double and scored when Woods reached on a Lady Cat error, Stamps’ single scored Woods to lift AC-S to an 8-1 lead. AC-S added an insurance run in the top of the sixth.

Kris-Anne Pardue earned the win for AC-S on the mound. Pardue worked four innings, allowing a run on three hits. Karley Burchett closed the game with three innings of two-hit ball.

ACS vs. South Warren

A three-run fourth inning helped the South Warren Lady Spartans defeat the Allen County-Scottsville Lady Patriots 5-1 Tuesday, May 30 in Region 4 semifinal action at Western Kentucky University.

 The Lady Spartans path to victory was aided by the two-hit pitching effort of Shelby Nunn. Throwing 96 pitches in her six innings of work, Nunn recorded eight strikeouts as she continually kept the AC-S batters off guard. Lady Patriots Kalee Skaggs, Jaylee Woods, Madi Gregory, RaeAnn Stafford and Jordan Anderson were Nunn’s strikeout victims in the game.

South Warren pushed a run across the plate in the home half of the second. Madison Stumbo singled to start the inning. Her courtesy runner, Kaitlyn Hare, moved to third following a South Warren sacrifice and a single off the bat of Kaitlyn LaSala. Hare would score a Bailee Collins hit into a fielders’ choice.

AC-S countered with their lone run of the game in the top of the third. Ally Byrn opened the inning with a single. After a strikeout by Anderson, Skaggs’ singled. Following a ground out by Woods, Whitney walked to load the bases. Taylor Stamps grounder plated Byrn to tie the score. Gregory then flied out to right field to end the threat.

The Lady Spartans plated their second run in the third. Three singles by Nunn, Madilyn Daughtey, and Stumbo led to South Warren taking a 2-1 lead. In their next at bat, South used a single by Kaitlyn Conley walks by Nunn and Alexus Isable, an AC-S error to add three runs and take control of the game.

The Lady Patriots never threatened after the third. AC-S went in order in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. In the seventh, Kris-Anne Pardue singled off Lady Spartan relief pitcher Karson Williams. A strikeout by Stafford would be followed by Byrn grounding into a season-ending double play.

The Lady Patriots finished with three hits---singles by Byrn, Skaggs, and Pardue---in 24 plate appearances. The Lady Spartans recorded nine hits in the game---seven hits off AC-S starter Karley Burchett and two off Pardue in her 2.2 innings of relief. Burchett and Pardue combined to throw 96 pitches and walk three Lady Spartan batters.

AC-S closes the season with an 18-14 record. South Warren (32-3) rallied to defeat Warren East in the Region 4 championship game to win their second consecutive regional crown.

Following the game, AC-S’s Skaggs and Whitney were presented with First Team All-Region honors. Stamps was also recognized as a Second Team All-Region player. Stamps and Pardue---both juniors that are expected to for the Lady Patriots next season--- were selected to the All-Tournament following last Thursday’s championship.

The semifinal loss marked the end of the 23rd season of fast pitch for ACS. Overall AC-S has an all-time record of 609-241-4.
