WKU English Contest Finalists Announced

Allen County-Scottsville High School has 13 AP (Advanced Placement) English students who are finalists in an English contest sponsored by the English Department at Western Kentucky University.

Students Dorian Blankenship and Damon Stone have been named finalists for Creative Writing. In this category, the students were asked to compose a creative work of 750 words or less based on a social media post. Their submission could be from any genre (fiction, poetry, nonfiction, playwriting, or screenwriting).

Students Bryson Bonds, Ella Burch, Ally Byrn, Giovanni Del Valle, Samuel Del Valle, Meg Foster, Robin Gagen, Emily Guedea, Felicia Hawkins, Karley Keen, and Brinley Swift were selected as finalists in Literary Analysis. Students were given the poem “You Were Sleeping When It Happened" by Mary Ellen Miller, asked to read the poem carefully, and write a well-organized, 500-750-word essay analyzing how the poet uses literary devices to develop the speaker’s emotional response.

Officials with the English Department at WKU will announce the winners at an awards celebration on February 6 at 4:30 in Cherry Hall, room 125, on the WKU Campus. The first place winner will receive a $500 Scholarship and $200 cash. The second place winner receives a $300 Scholarship and $100 cash with the third place winner receiving a $200 Scholarship and $50 cash. The winners’ schools will receive a $50 contribution to the PTA funds.

Last year, the AP English Lit classes at AC-SH had 12 finalists in the contest and a first and third place winner.
