ACS Takes Two at Franklin-Simpson

The Allen County-Scottsville Lady Patriots and Patriots posted wins Tuesday in action at Franklin-Simpson. Sarah Sutton’s 21 points led the Lady Patriots to a 42-30 victory over the Lady Cats while Brett Rippy scored 13 points to lead the Patriots to a 48-44 win over the Wildcats.

In the girls game, a 14-6 second quarter by AC-S broke open a tied game and staked the Lady Patriots to a 19-13 lead at halftime. AC-S led 31-21 after the third frame and opened a 40-25 lead midway through the fourth prior to a late run by the Lady Cats.

The Lady Patriots were 15 of 42 from the floor (35.7%) and made 11 of 14 free throws for a 78.6% clip. Franklin-Simpson sank 12 of 30 field goals (40%) and four of nine free throws (44.4%). On the glass, AC-S out rebounded Franklin-Simpson 28-23 with Sutton leading the way with seven. The Lady Cats turned the ball over 22 times resulting in 19 Lady Patriot points.

Taylor Carter added eight points, five rebounds and four assists for AC-S (16-5, 2-2). Mason Towery scored seven points, grabbed five rebounds, and handed out four assists. Franklin-Simpson (5-19) was led by Kate Norwood who finished with eight points.

AC-S (16-5, 2-2) will play Monroe County (3-15, 0-5) in District 15 action at 6 p.m. on Friday, February 1. The Lady Patriots downed the Lady Falcons 66-52 on January 4. A win over Monroe County and a victory against Glasgow (15-7, 4-1) next Monday would give AC-S a share of the top spot in the District 15 standings.

In Tuesday’s nightcap, AC-S overcame six of 21 shooting from the floor during the second and third quarters to record their 18th win of the year.

The Patriots opened a 14-8 lead after the first quarter and built a 17-8 lead at the 6:39 mark of the second quarter. Franklin-Simpson pulled to within five, 27-22, by halftime. The Wildcats continued a 14-0 run to start the second half, holding the Patriots without a point until a Camden Carver free throw with 2:32 left in the period. A Mason Shirley foul shot and a 3-point basket from Rippy pulled the Patriots to within two, 34-32, starting the fourth. A quick three-pointer by Shirley and hoops from Rippy and Jax Cooper enabled AC-S to open a 40-36 lead with five minutes remaining. Franklin-Simpson closed to within two on three occasions but free throws from Cooper, Shirley, and Rippy sealed the win for the Patriots.

AC-S finished the night shooting 38.6% from the floor (17-44) and 10-16 from the line (62.5%). Franklin-Simpson was 16-44 from the floor (36.4%) and 8-13 (61.5%) at the foul line. The Patriots out rebounded the Wildcats 32-29, forced 15 turnovers, and recorded nine steals.

Mason Shirley scored 10 points, dished out five assists, and recorded six steals. Jax Cooper added 10 points. Owen Stamper added eight points, handed out five assists, and grabbed a career-best 12 boards. The Wildcats (11-10) were led by DeMarco Chatman who finished with 20 points.

AC-S (18-4, 4-0) will host Monroe County (8-12, 2-3) in District 15 action Friday night. In January, the Patriots defeated the Falcons 81-69 in Tompkinsville. The game will tip around 7:30 following homecoming activities at Patriot Gym. A Patriot win will assure AC-S of the top-seed for next month’s District 15 tournament at Monroe County regardless of the outcome of next Monday’s final district match-up with Glasgow (15-8,3-2).
