ACS Senior Honored By State and ACT

ACS Senior Honored By State and ACT

Allen County-Scottsville High School senior Kendra Gayle Silvano received the Student Readiness Award from ACT in Frankfort on April 1. The recognition honors her as the state’s exemplary high school senior who embodies successful readiness for college and career.

As the state winner in the ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign in the Student Readiness Award category, Silvano will receive a $500 scholarship from ACT toward attendance at the postsecondary institution of her choice.

Silvano will also be included in the national pool of student exemplars and will be considered for moving forward in the competition to select one student to be chosen to receive the National Student Readiness Award. If Silvano is chosen as a national semifinalist, she will receive a $2000 scholarship, and if chosen as the National Exemplar, she will receive a $4000 scholarship.

According to Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holiday, Silvano is being recognized based on five accomplishments.

·    Performance in relation to ACT’s College Readiness Benchmarks in English, mathematics, reading,  and science.

·    Demonstrated progress toward college and career readiness between grade 8 and grade 12.

·    Demonstrated success in high school coursework, as signified by high school grade point average.

·    Success beyond the classroom, including extracurricular activities, leadership positions, community service, and work experience.

·    Unique qualities such as personal traits, future plans, or success in the face of adversity or other extraordinary circumstances.

Silvano was publicly recognized for the honor at the Kentucky Board of Education meeting at the State Board Room at the Capital Plaza in Frankfort. Roger Marcum, Kentucky Board of Education Chair and Commissioner Holliday presented her with the award and a representative of ACT was on hand to congratulate her as well.
