Four Allen County-Scottsville High School seniors received prestigious awards during Class Night ceremonies on Saturday, April 26. Houston Porter was selected for the Outstanding Senior Award. Emma Brown was presented with the Citizenship Award. Brenna Eaton and Dominic Vander Stroom received the Service to School and Community Award. The Outstanding Senior Award is given to the senior who “has excelled academically, is socially accepted, shows leadership skills, is a good citizen, and is involved in school activities.” The AC-SH faculty selected Porter for the honor. The Citizenship Award is presented to a senior who “must exhibit qualities of a good citizen---respect; honesty; integrity; and, concern for others. The student may be a leader or a follower, but must always be willing to accept their share of responsibility in any club or activity. The faculty based on her outstanding citizenship qualities selected Brown. The Service to School and Community Award is based on the belief that “service to mankind is the very best work of life.” To be considered, a senior must be involved in both activities at school and participate in community activities that are not associated with the school. This year, a tie in voting by the faculty led to Eaton and Vander Stroom both receiving the award.

Allen County-Scottsville High School juniors Tyler Shaw and Tucker Stinson have been accepted for the 2025 Kentucky Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs (GSE). The three-week residential program brings together students from across the Commonwealth who aspire to enter the business/entrepreneur field following high school and college education. The program’s website notes, “We bring teens from across the state into a three-week residential program, immerse them in a creative space and arm them with the tools needed to unleash their entrepreneurial spirits for the betterment of Kentucky.” GSE began in 2013 and gives participants an “authentic glimpse into entrepreneurship and continues to develop them along their entrepreneurial journey.” GSE officials note that students are selected based on their work ethic, growth mindset, skills and talents, wiliness to take risks, their openness and flexibility and openness to new ideas. Shaw and Stinson are among approximately 200 high school students selected from high schools across the state. The program will be held at the University of Kentucky from late June through mid-July.
