Volleyball Struggles in Opening Matches

Volleyball season has started for the Allen County-Scottsville Lady Patriots. However, the team’s results in four matches in the first week was not what first year coach Cameron Cook had hoped for. After defeating Monroe County last Thursday 2-0 (25-22, 25-19), AC-S dropped Saturday matches to Breckenridge County 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-11) and Grayson County 3-1 (30-28, 22-25, 25-21, 25-18). Monday, Warren East downed AC-S 2-0 (25-17, 25-19).

The season started with the win at Monroe County. Maddie Stallings had five kills and two blocks.  Layla Carter added three kills, eight assists, and three aces. Chloe Cook recorded three kills, 11 assists and 10 digs. Madison Lynch finished with seven digs while Olivia Coulter had six digs. Ellie Barton contributed five kills, three aces, and three digs while Ava Kinslow recorded seven digs.

In Monday’s match with Warren East, the Lady Patriots struggled to get into a flow. In the first set, AC-S built a 7-3 lead early and led 12-8 following a Stallings’ winner. East called time out and responded with a 6-0 run to open the 14-12 lead. After a kill by Cook stooped East’s 8-0 charge, the Lady Raiders closed out the set with a 9-4 sport to post the 25-17 win.

The second set wasn’t a thing of beauty for AC-S. Warren East opened a 7-2 lead and quickly extended their lead to 13-3. Despite coach Cook making several changes, AC-S could not get on track as East cruised to the 25-9 set win.

The Lady Patriots will have a few days to regroup. Their next matches will be on Saturday at Patriot Gym against Edmonson County, Russell County, Bethlehem, and Adair County in the day-long Southern Kentucky Slam event. Action will start at 9 a.m. at Patriot Gym. The Lady Patriots will host Glasgow on Monday.
