Junior Beta Participates at State

The Junior Beta chapter from the James E. Bazzell Middle School just missed qualifying to attend the National Junior Beta Convention later this year in Florida.

The club finished fourth in the Songfest competition---an event that includes all the students in the club performing a song in line with the Junior Beta theme for the year. The top three schools in Songfest earn the opportunity to represent their school and state at the national event.

“We placed fourth as a school, one place away from a national bid for the entire group,” noted club sponsor Rita York.

In addition, 13 students worked together to earn a fourth place finish in the team event of scrapbook.

“Our scrapbook committee placed in the top ten for scrapbooks in the first round, which required an interview about the design of the book,” York said. “We ended up receiving a final fourth place finish for scrapbook.”

The scrapbook committee students included Taylor Beth Huff, Shea Robison, Abby Stamps, Abby Gann, Katilyn Ploughe, Haleigh Steenbergen, Allyson Miller, Kenzie Barton, Caelyn Cline, Kinley Costello, Emma Turner, Keylie Smith, and Brittany Anderson.

Individual accolades included a third place finish for Kierra Owens in oil painting---a place that earns Owens the opportunity to compete in the nationals in Florida in June. In addition, Emma Robinson---a national participant in speech last year---also scored high honors again this year in the category.

This year’s Junior Beta convention included 107 students from the Bazzell Middle School---the largest group of Beta students to ever attend from the middle school. Bazzell Junior Beta sponsors include York, April Craft, Sandy Williams, Amanda Emery, and Haley Kirtley.
