Allen County-Scottsville golfer Owen Stamper
has been selected Second Team, All-State by Golf House Kentucky and the
Kentucky Golf Coaches Association.
All-State Golf First and Second Team
selections are based on points earned in high school invitational tournaments,
the regional tournament, and the Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/Kentucky High
School Athletic Association state tournament. An All-State points committee
reviews the results and makes the selections based on points earned throughout
the course of the season.
Stamper finished with 460 points, 19th on
the overall list. This year, Trinity junior and individual state champion John
Marshall Butler earned 820 points to lead all golfers, thus earning the title of
Mr. Golf for 2018. Selections in the top
10 in points earn First Team All-State honors with golfers 11-20 in points receiving
Second Team recognition.
The selection for Stamper capped a season in
which the junior carded a two-day score of 147 (+3) to place ninth in the 2018 Leachman
Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA state golf championship. Stamper’s season included
first place finishes in three 18-hole events---the South Laurel Invitational
(69), the Monroe County Invitational (73), and the Wildcat Invitational (70).
Stamper also was runner-up in the Region 3 golf tournament with a score of 72.
Stamper finished the season with an 18-hole
stroke average of 74.3 and a 34.1 stroke average in nine-hole events. With one
exception, Stamper posted a score of 77 or below in each 18-hole event he
played during the high school golf season.
In addition, Stamper has accepted an
invitation to participate in the J.B. Holmes Cup. The invitation-only event is
a Ryder Cup-styled event in which the 48 participating players are designated
to represent Team Kentucky or Team J.B. Holmes. The tournament will be played
Saturday and Sunday, October 20 and 21, at the Old Bridge Golf Club in
Danville.
