Two strokes separated the Allen
County-Scottsville Patriot golf team from a trip to the
Leachman-Buick-GMC-Cadillac/Kentucky High School Athletic Association state
tournament.
In play last Friday at the Franklin Country
Club, the AC-S golf five of juniors Owen Stamper and Bryson Bonds, seniors Tate
Stinson and Brett Rippy, and sophomore Peyton Cline carded a team score of 324.
Their final score was one stroke higher than the 323 rounds of South Warren and
Greenwood. Bowling Green’s round of 307 earned the Purples the Region 3
championship while South Warren placed second following a one-hole playoff with
Greenwood. Both Bowling Green and South Warren will play in the state
tournament this week.
In individual play, Stamper fired a round of
72 to finish as the Region 3 Runner-up. South Warren senior C.M. Mixon claimed
Medalist honors with a round of 70. Stamper’s score---as one of the three lowest
scores by individuals not on the Bowling Green of South Warren squads---qualified
the Patriot junior for play Friday in the state tournament.
The remaining Patriot golfers and their
scores included a round of 82 by Bonds and an 83 by Rippy. Stinson fired an 87 with Cline finishing with
an 88. Stinson concludes his senior season with a stroke average of 85 while
Rippy competes his senior year with an average of 83.8. Bonds will finish the
season with an 18-hole stroke average of 85.1 while Cline averaged 91.3 in
18-hole play this year.
Stamper will make his second consecutive appearance in the state golf
tournament. At last year’s state
golf tournament, Stamper made the cut on the first day to reach the event’s
final round. Stamper finished with a two-day score of 158 (+14).
This year, Stamper will carry a season
18-hole average score of 74.5 into the two-day, 36-hole event Friday and
Saturday at the Bowling Green Country Club. Stamper’s season to date includes
three medalist honors in 18-hole events as well as a pair of second place
finishes in tournament.
Play starts at 7 a.m. Friday with Stamper
slated to start from the first hole tee box at 8:30. He will be playing
alongside Clay Anderson from Russell County and Brody Webb from Scott County.
Both Anderson and Webb carded rounds of 71 in regional play. Anderson is the
Region 4 individual champion.
