Senior Parent Meeting Scheduled for September 17

(by Don Meador, Allen County Schools)

The Allen County-Scottsville High School guidance department strongly encourages the parents/guardians of the Class of 2020 to attend a Senior Parent Meeting on Tuesday, September 17 at 6 p.m. at the high school. Seniors and/or parents/guardians in attendance will learn about multiple topics.

“The meeting will cover senior events, scholarships, KEES money, FAFSA (Free Application Federal Student Aid), and ACT benchmark,” explained AC-SH senior guidance counselor Magen Meador.

Representatives from several colleges are expected to be in attendance. The list includes Campbellsville, Lindsey Wilson, the Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKYCTC), the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville, and Western Kentucky University. Representatives from the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA) and the military are also tentatively scheduled to attend.

“This meeting is important to senior parents because it will cover financial aid, scholarships, college information, and events coming up during their child’s senior year,” Meador added. “Having this meeting in September also allows parents to get information regarding the FAFSA which opens October 1”

The FAFSA is the federal on-line application that senior students/parents are required to fill out in order to receive all types of federal student aid. FAFSA applications will be received starting October 1. Officials on hand at the meeting will explain the process and procedure for completing the application.

Meador notes that, many times, students are still undecided about attending college in September but points out that parents/guardians should still attend this meeting.

“If children are undecided now and decide later to go to college, they will be behind because they do not have the information they need” Meador said.

Parents/guardians will also learn about the high school’s College Application Day scheduled for November 1, the dates and importance of taking the ACT in October, November, or December and the many scholarship opportunities that are available in the fall as well as scholarships available later in the school year. The meeting will be held in the library or moved to the auditorium if additional space is required.
