Stamps Places First in National Beta Event

Alex Stamps

Alex Stamps is a First Place winner at the National Beta Convention. The Allen County-Scottsville junior won the Best Sculpture competition at the recently completed National Convention in Louisville.

“My sculpture was a movie camera,” Stamps explained. “I choose that theme because the Beta theme was the Power of Beta and Super Heroes. So, I did a movie camera to go along with the theme.”

Stamps’ metal work of art is very authentic looking---woven into the finished product over an extended period.

“It took about a month,” Stamps noted. “I would work on it in hour or hour and a half increments or so while at school.”

The art of sculpture is a hobby Stamps has been involved in for less than two years through Beta.

“I started during my freshman year because I wanted to try it out,” Stamps said, explaining that his creation last year resulted in high awards at the Kentucky Beta Convention and the national event “Last year, I got first in State and fifth at Nationals. This year, I was fifth in State and first in Nationals. Taking first in Nationals was very much of a surprise.”

His work in sculpture has been a learning experience and something he plans to continue creating projects, especially through Beta.

“I learned that I loved to create stuff,” Stamps added. “You can go crazy with it. I like creating stuff out of metal, it’s more fun that way but I just love doing it.”

Plans call for the winning project to be displayed at the high school upon resumption of school in August.

Adalyn Skipworth also represented AC-SH at the National Convention. However, her color photography project was not selected among the top finalists.
