The Allen County-Scottsville High School academic team enjoyed an exciting two days of competition in Kentucky and Tennessee,
The weekend opened with the completion of the District Governor’s Scholars academic match. The annual competition is the “postseason level” for academic squads with the teams working their way toward the state Governor’s Cup matches in March. This year’s competition was postponed two weeks as a result of the recent ice and snow storm across the area. Last Friday, Barren County hosted teams to finish the knowledge and quick recall portion of the event.
Overall the AC-S Quick Recall team took District Runner Up. The AC-S Future Problem Solving took first place. Team members consisted of Jack Smith, Logan Daniels, JoyDale Williams, and Nathan Carmack.
In individual assessments in math, Carmack placed second in math, Ryan Grow was third, and Lily Cook tied for fourth, In the science category, Aiden Blankenship was second with Daniels earning fifth place. For Language Arts, James Fisher placed fourth with Haley Dunn earning a fifth place. Williams was third in Arts and Humanities with Carmack fourth in the same area. In Composition Writing, Daniels was second.
Last Saturday, the team traveled to Gallatin to compete in the Sumner County Invitational at Gallatin High School. The competition is a National Academic Quiz Tournament event and features dozens of academic teams from across Tennessee and Kentucky.
AC-S carried three teams to the competition. The “A” team, consisting of Olivia Baird, Nathan Carmack, Logan Daniels, and James Fisher, finished sixth in a field of 36 total teams.
“This is the highest finish for any AC-S team ever in a National Academic Quiz Tournament,” noted academic coach Adam Crabtree”
ACS competed in round robin matches in the morning and went 4-1. The squad recorded wins over Clay County B (180-90), Portland B (225--5), Hendersonville A (260-155), and York Institute (245-210).
The results moved the Patriots to the 16-team bracket for the afternoon. AC-S went 2-2, with wins over Adair County (225-205) and Mt. Juliet (225-205). The three losses on the day were to Hume Fogg (210-105), Franklin Road Academy (500-95), and Portland (275-110).
“The surprising news was that we may have qualified for the High School National Championship Tournament (HSNCT) in Atlanta, May 22-24, " Crabtree explained. “Our school has never qualified for this tournament before. We await final results to be posted to the NAQT site to see whether we qualify. The top 15% of teams at these kinds of tournaments qualify for the HSNCT.”
Results are expected to be announced in a few days.
