The Allen County-Scottsville tennis season is underway. This spring 19 student-athletes----14 young women and five young men---are on the courts with expectations high for a strong season.
“The tennis team is looking like we will have a promising season,” noted first-year coach Abigail Collins. “While we are few, these students are coming out of the gate with a great attitude and motivation to win. As long as they keep encouraging one another, I think we will have a successful season.”
Six seniors lead the team---Allison Ford, Kennedy Carter, George Tabor, Danica Harmon, Faith Schaberg and James Fisher.
“James (Fisher) will be playing mainly singles,” Collins said. “Allison (Ford) and Kennedy (Carter) will be playing doubles together. George (Tabor) plays doubles with (junior) Lilee Temple. Danica (Harmon) will be playing singles. Faith (Schaberg) will be playing doubles with her sister, Julia (Schaberg).”
Collins adds that several underclassmen are on the squad.
“Freshman Alexa Stovall is playing singles,” Collins stated. “Sophomore Lindsey Roberts plays singles with juniors Abby Green and Katie Hogan play doubles. Freshmen Anderson Byrn and Lane Temple are set to play doubles and singles this season.”
Additional players are sophomore Roman Tabor, freshman Julia Schaberg, junior Kennedy Taylor, sophomore Marlene Hagenmeyer, sophomore Hailey Pigue, sophomore Brooklyn Biggs, and junior Jaydon Stilton.
Collins adds that she likes what she is seeing from her squad given the fact that several players bring limited experience.
“Tennis is looking to be very strong this season but most of the players are newer to the game,” Collins pointed out. “However, the veterans of the team have really stepped up to help train our newbies. All ACS tennis players this season are highly coachable and eager to learn more about tennis making exponential progress on the court.”
The community is welcome at all matches. Home contests began around 4:30 at the high school courts. However, start times may vary slightly from opponent to opponent. AC-S will have tennis contests until the regional tournaments in early May.
