Brooklynn Melton, sophomore, travelled with ACSHS’s Educators Rising chapter to the Kentucky State EdRising Conference in March 2025. While there, she beautifully delivered a speech about the defining moment in her life when she knew she wanted to become an educator–when she taught her first lesson. She represented Allen County Schools outstandingly and highlighted some of the innovative instructional work we are doing. Brooklynn’s moving speech delivery led her to place third in Kentucky and qualify to compete at the national level. We are so proud of her and all of her hard work!

Allen County-Scottsville High School juniors Tyler Shaw and Tucker Stinson have been accepted for the 2025 Kentucky Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs (GSE). The three-week residential program brings together students from across the Commonwealth who aspire to enter the business/entrepreneur field following high school and college education.
The program’s website notes, “We bring teens from across the state into a three-week residential program, immerse them in a creative space and arm them with the tools needed to unleash their entrepreneurial spirits for the betterment of Kentucky.” GSE began in 2013 and gives participants an “authentic glimpse into entrepreneurship and continues to develop them along their entrepreneurial journey.”
GSE officials note that students are selected based on their work ethic, growth mindset, skills and talents, wiliness to take risks, their openness and flexibility and openness to new ideas.
Shaw and Stinson are among approximately 200 high school students selected from high schools across the state. The program will be held at the University of Kentucky from late June through mid-July.

Allen County-Scottsville High School juniors Katelyn Ausbrooks, Olivia Baird, Kennedy Carter, and James Fisher are 2025 Kentucky Governor’s Scholars. The foursome join rising seniors from across the Commonwealth for a summer of enhanced learning.
The Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program (GSP) allows selected students to spend five weeks taking college-level class work at selected Kentucky colleges and universities during the summer proceeding their senior year. GSP attendees participate in various college-level courses and experience college-life during their five-week stay.
GSP selections follow a lengthy process. Last fall, interested juniors completed GSP application packets. District selections were made in January. A GSP statewide committee then reviewed their application materials for statewide selection. The panel consists of college admission personnel, college and high school teachers, and education leaders from different areas of the state. Each committee member reads and scores only one of seven different sections.
The sections include academic achievement---consisting of ACT, PSAT, or SAT test score, grade point average, and difficulty of class load. The Student Profile sections includes extracurricular activities, voluntary or paid service, and honors and awards. The writing entry section of the application materials requires a 500-word essay. A sixth section area is based on a teacher recommendation which must be completed by a teacher who has had the student in class for a core academic subject in ninth, 10th, or 11th grade. The final section area is a based on a recommendation from a community leader in a role not associated with the applicant's school.
Ausbrooks, Baird, Carter, and Fisher will learn in May which college---Centre, Morehead State, or Murray State---they will attend when GSP begins in June.
